When Should You Replace Car Tyres?

Cars do not comprise any unnecessary parts or components and almost all of them play an equally crucial role in the proper functioning of a car. However, tyres top the priority list when it comes to care and maintenance since they are the only ideal point of contact between a vehicle and roads. Still, it is quite tricky to understand the right time to replace tyres.

A delay in tyre replacement and using the vehicle with worn-out tyres can lead to its poor performance or even accidents. Also, one cannot get tyres replaced frequently or unnecessarily since they are expensive. Therefore, it is critical to get them checked regularly and replaced at the right time.

Tyres do not come with a fixed lifespan. They wear out depending upon factors like how aggressively or carefully the vehicle is driven, the environment, the condition of frequently travelled roads, tyre age, tyre tread, etc. Below are some points one should look out for to figure out if it is the right time to replace tyres. If you are an automobile enthusiast and want to learn in detail, you may join short-term training and certification courses, like Automotive Mechanic Training Programmes, Automotive Sales Training Programmes, Automotive Management Training Programmes, etc., offered by ASDC (Automotive Skills Development Council)

  1. To indicate the tread wear, tyres are designed with tread wear indicators i.e. tiny bars build in longitudinal tread grooves. These bars are barely visible when the tyre is new but with time, the tyre tread starts wearing down to reveal these indicators. Once the tread is flush with the tread indicator’s level, the tyres must be replaced without any ado.

  2. Factors like misaligned tyres can lead to asymmetric tyre wear. In such cases, the tread on one side of the tyre may appear to be completely fine but it might have reached the tread indicator’s level on the other side. This calls for not only tyre replacement but also a repair or realignment so that the new tyres do not wear out asymmetrically.

  3. The tyres of the cars that are driven occasionally may harden up. Cracks on the tread surface and/or on the sidewalls are signs of hardened tyres. Such tyres are not good to go on a long drive or to drive on highways. Therefore, they should be replaced before going out on a venture.

  4. The tyre rubber hardens up with age as well. Hardened tyres lose their ability to flex and grip the road surface well. Therefore, even if the cracks do not appear, tyres should be replaced after 3 years of their instalments or after travelling 40,000 km, whichever is earlier.

  5. Sidewalls play a significant role in the design and build of radial tyres -- a type of tyre commonly used in passenger vehicles. Potholes and damaged roads can lead to bubbles or crack in the sidewalls that further affects their quality and functioning. This damaged part can be reinforced with the help of sidewall patches at a tyre repair shop, however, if the damage is extreme or the vehicle is driven on highways or long routes, tyre replacement is a better and safer solution.

In addition to the above-mentioned points, external parameters should also be kept in mind to get the tyres replaced. For example, it is suggested to get them replaced before monsoons or before going on a road trip if the tyre replacement time is nearing. If you want to learn more about automobiles, tyres, tyre treads and upcoming technologies in the auto sector, join government-recognised Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana Courses that also include on-the-job employment opportunities in addition to hands-on learning and training.
